Thomas George, the son of Earl and Carmen (Rossez) McDonough was born on November 26, 1941 in Faribault. He attended Bethlehem Academy High School and graduated with the class of 1960. After high school Tom worked at Lockwood Auto and the DX Service Station. On December 1, 1962 he was united in marriage to Sandra Teske at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Faribault. Tom’s career in the construction industry began with BMI and later worked with Healy Construction. In 1978 Tom made the decision to start his own construction company, MET-CON Construction. The company started out of his back garage with a few pieces of equipment, 12 employees and $300,000 of work. As the company grew it moved to different locations. MET-CON Construction evolved into MET-CON COMPANIES as Tom purchased different businesses that complimented theirs including Bauernfeind & Goedtel, J&K Masonry, BCM Grading & Excavating and B&B Manufacturing and Assembly. He also started several businesses including McDonough Leasing, Mankato Division of MET-CON Companies, a Trucking Division, McDonough Farms, MET-CON Lumber & Hardware, MET-CON Development Companies, MDC Real Estate Services and Flickertail Self Storage. Today MET-CON COMPANIES employs several hundred employees. Tom credits the success of his companies as a result of the dedicated employees who have chosen to make their career with MET-CON.
Tom enjoyed working, driving his corvettes, spending time at his cabin on Wells Lake with his family and friends, trips to Las Vegas (one time chartering two planes for employees), operating big machinery in the early years (and later just buying them), mowing the lawn and holding court Saturday mornings with doughnuts at the shop (which was a work day). When he took the time to relax, he enjoyed watching the Vikings and Twins with his beloved canine companion Brandy by his side. He was a member of the Moose Club in Faribault.
He is survived by his wife Sandra McDonough of Faribault; by his children, Randy (Lisa) McDonough of Faribault and their children, Macy, Marla and Mason McDonough, Tami (Darren) Steeves of Faribault and their children, Matt (Casie) Steeves (Caden and Chloe), Ashley (Adam) Suckow (Wyatt and Connor), Lindsey Steeves, Zach (Kaity) Steeves (Kennedy and Cameron), Courtney Steeves and Nick Steeves, Scott (Sue) McDonough of Faribault and their children, Maria, Kathryn and Lauren McDonough; by three siblings, Richard (Charlotte) McDonough, Michael “Mick” (Sharon) McDonough, both of Faribault and Jean (Mike) Montgomery of Bloomington, MN; by brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Art (Shirley) Teske, Carol (Dave) Kelly, Pam (Bob) Heine, Bob (Julie) Teske, Debbie (Ron) Schema and Charlotte Teske, all of Faribault and by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
