Roger "Rog" Speikers, age 77 of Faribault, died Friday, January 3, 2014 at the St. Lucas Care Center in Faribault, MN following an extended illness
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 9th, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at the Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 139 Mercy Drive, in Faribault. Interment will be held at St. Lawrence Cemetery, Faribault.
Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home & Crematory in Faribault on Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday for one hour prior to services.
Roger Nicholas Speikers, son of Reiner and Angeline (Stadler) Speikers was born on May 5, 1936 in Montgomery, MN, the second of 4 boys. He attended St. Lawrence Catholic School and Bethlehem Academy, graduating in 1954. Roger worked at Nutting Truck and Caster Co. for a period of time and then went into a tiling business with his brother Carl. He also worked on cars as a sideline. After two week training in heavy equipment he began his career in construction, operating a backhoe. There was about a 5 year span when Roger and his brother Carl owned and operated a well drilling company. Roger resumed his career in construction which carried him through to retirement. He met Kathy Tapper and after a brief courtship they married October 20, 1984 in Faribault. Roger welcomed into his life Kathy's 2 sons, Tim and Steve and their families. Roger enjoyed visiting with his four grandchildren, Justin, Ryan, Andrew, and Jessica. Roger enjoyed gardening, fishing, and horseshoe, and shared produce from his garden with friends and neighbors. Throughout his life, Roger was always a helpful and giving person. When he saw people in need, he was there for them.
He is survived by his wife Kathy and two sons, Tim and Julie Tapper of Plymouth, MN and Steve and Anne Tapper of Sartell, MN; four grandchildren; three brothers, Andrew (Jan) Speikers of Kenyon, MN, Carl (Judy) Speikers of Buffalo, MN, and Marty (Jane) Speikers of Owatonna, MN; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and nephew David Speikers.
