Maureen E. Nelson, age 77, of Faribault, MN passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 8, 2024 at her home from an aggressive short term battle with cancer, with her family at her side.
Maureen Elizabeth, the daughter of William and Lillian (Prehall) Hart was born on November 21, 1946 in Duluth, MN. As a young girl Maureen and her family lived up on the Iron Range in different cities including, Chisholm, Taconite and Hibbing. They also spent time near Rainy Lake. Maureen attended Chisholm High School and graduated with the class of 1963. In 1964 she moved to Faribault. In August of 1964 she was united in marriage to Steven Lloyd Nelson in Faribault. Steven preceded her in death on November 14, 1975. Maureen worked in the kitchen at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School from 1979 to 1999 doing cooking and office work as needed. After working at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, she worked at Rison Homes for 26 years as House Supervisor, until recently. Maureen loved being able to continue to work at 77 years old. Maureen had a stellar work attendance, not missing a day of work in 26 years. During Maureen’s life she enjoyed being by the water, and spending time at the lake cabin in Wisconsin with family and friends, loved garage sale and antique shopping, tending to her flowers, but most of all she cherished any time spent with her family and her dog “Lillian”.
She is survived by her children, Elizabeth (Tom) Silkey of Faribault, MN, Dicie Nelson of Apple Valley, MN and Shawn Hruby (Angela Rasmusson Leach) of Apple Valley, MN; by three grandchildren, Steven (Samantha) Nelson, Robert (Hannah) Silkey and Makenzie Nelson; by two great grandchildren, Paisley Nelson and Blake Silkey; by her special friend and companion, Ken Hruby of Faribault; by her niece, Heidi (Allan) Perry and by other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, sister, Colleen Quast, brother-in-law, Mike Forcelle and her parents.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault, with Fr. Henry Doyle, officiating.
Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The family extends their gratitude to the wonderful staff at District One Hospital, Allina Hospice and Allina Health Care Institute and all the exceptional doctors, nurses, nurse aides and others that helped Maureen through her cancer journey.
