Kenneth "Ken" Behm, age 86, of Janesville, died Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at the St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester following a recent illness.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Arnoldt-McRaith Funeral Home & Crematory of Janesville, with Pastor Paul Muther officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at the Janesville Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, July 19, 2014 for one hour prior to services.
It was Ken's request to donate his body to science to help with future advancements in medicine.
Kenneth Neils, the son of Frank and Clara (Neils) Behm, was born on December 19, 1927 in Brainerd, MN. He attended grade school and some high school in Brainerd before their family relocated to Janesville in 1942. He then attended Janesville High School and graduated with the class of 1945. Following high school, Ken was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corp and later the U.S. Air Force, and was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas for nineteen months.
After receiving an honorable discharge, Ken attended Mankato Commercial College. He also worked as a fireman on the ore boats on the Great Lakes during the summer and in the winter attended school in Duluth and eventually earned his Marine Engineer Degree. Ken then moved to the Montgomery area where he worked for Green Giant as a boiler man for a few years before retiring from E.F. Johnson and Co. after twenty five years of employment. Ken was a longtime member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Janesville, and at one time was a Congregation and Endowment Fund Treasurer. He was also a member of Ducks Unlimited, NRA, and the American Legion Post 281. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, and growing Amaryllis and Gloxinia flowers
Ken is survived by his sisters, Rita Fitzsimmons of Brandon, Florida, Mildred King of San Angelo, TX, Phyllis "Pat" Dumdei of Janesville, Bernice Laager of Grand Forks, ND, Joyce Veir of Stoughton, WI; his cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Hubert Behm; and by his sister, Maxine Urbach.
