Joan Gillis

Joan Marie Gillis, 83, of Whispering Pines, NC, passed away on January 13, 2020 at First Health Hospice House in Pinehurst, NC.

Born on September 10, 1936, in Gage County, Nebraska to the late Kenneth and Edythe Buchanan Swanson. Joan and John, her loving husband of 62 years, moved to North Carolina in 1997.  As members of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, she sang in the church choir.  She was an avid golfer and member of Whispering Pines Country Club.

She is survived by her husband John Gillis; four children, John Alan Gillis of Oak Island, NC, Mary Knox (Douglas) of New Freedom, PA, Joseph Gillis (Carrie) of Westfield, Indiana, and Martin Gillis of Minnetrista, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; brother Kent Swanson of North Platte, Nebraska, and two sisters Kathryn Irwin of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Linda Staffier of Mendon, Massachusetts.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 139 Mercy Drive, Faribault, MN.  Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Faribault.

Memorial visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the church.  The Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m.
