Jerome Gillis

Jerome "Dutch" Gillis, age 79, of Faribault, MN, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2016 at his home with his family at his side, following a stroke that occurred nine years ago.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at the Christ the King Catholic Church in Medford, MN. Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Faribault.

Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault on Friday from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday for one hour prior to the services at the church.

Jerome Joseph was born on December 28, 1936, in Faribault to John and Ann (David) Gillis. He graduated from Bethlehem Academy High School with the class of 1955. Dutch served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1955-59. He was united in marriage to Judy Beecher on December 26, 1959 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Faribault. Dutch had a lengthy career as a heavy equipment operator. He worked for over 25 years with M.G. Astleford Construction. He also worked with Ames Construction Co. and retired from Enebak Construction in 2001. Dutch was a longtime member of the Operating Engineers Local #49. He loved to tinker with and fix many things, being a jack-of-all-trades and master of none! Dutch had a big heart, always willing to help others. He was devoted to his faith, family and friends and treasured time with his grandchildren. Dutch was a jokester, loved life, and enjoyed cruising the town on his scooter.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 56 years, Judy Gillis of Faribault; children, David (Crystal) Gillis of Faribault, Lisa (Joe) Fierst of Faribault, Sharon (Brian) Rudie of Staples, MN, and Nancy (Scott) Johnson of Faribault; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; brothers, John (Joan) Gillis of Whispering Pines, NC, and David (Bette) Gillis of Barrington, IL; sisters, Bea Conner of Charleston, SC, and Barb (Allen) Callstrom of Lakeville, MN; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ann; and sisters, Mary Ann Smuda and Theresa Dorweiller.
