Irene M. Gomsrud, age 93, of Janesville passed away on Monday, January 12, 2015 at the Janesville Nursing Home following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church in Janesville with Father Michael Cronin officiating. Private family interment will be held at St. Ann Catholic Cemetery at a later time.
Visitation will be on Thursday at the church from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.
Arrangements are being completed by Arnoldt-McRaith Funeral Home in Janesville.
Irene Margaret, daughter of Francis and Florence (Harty) Holmes, was born on June 26, 1921 in Freedom Township. She graduated from Waldorf High School in 1939 and attended Mankato Beauty School for one year. Following school, she owned and operated Irene's Beauty Shop in Janesville until she was married. Irene was united in marriage to George Gomsrud on June 25, 1946 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Waldorf. Her family and faith were very important to her, along with her Irish heritage.
Irene is survived by her children, Richard Gomsrud of Waseca, Dan Gomsrud of Janesville, and Susan (Steve) Cowdin of Janesville; grandchildren, Andy (Chris) Cowdin, Katie (Todd) Adamek, and Peter Cowdin; great-grandchildren, Emilie, Joey, Maddy, Gabe, and Emmett; brother, Jerry (Bonnie) Holmes of Waldorf; sister, Helen Harty of Watertown, SD; and by many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George in 1996; her brother-in-law, Bob Harty; and by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray and Barb Gomsrud, Marion and Marv Koenig, and Aaron and Ruth Schwanke.
