Herbert "Herb" Stam

Herb K. “Herbie” Stam, age 88 of Faribault, MN went home to Jesus on Thursday, August 1, 2019.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home & Crematory with the Rev. Ron Wik officiating.  Interment will be held at the Calvary Cemetery in Faribault with military honors provided by the Rice County Central Veterans Organization.

Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home on Tuesday from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m.

Herbert Kenneth, the son of LeRoy and Olive (Roberts) Stam, was born on June 21, 1931 in Faribault, MN.  He attended Faribault High School and graduated with the class of 1950.  Following high school Herb joined the U.S. Marines Corps during the Korean War.  Herb married his beloved Rose Madigan on June 12, 1965.  Together they ran the local cab, ambulance and hearse business for many years.  Rosie preceded Herb in death on December 26, 2009.  Herb later began working for the Rice County Sheriff’s Office in 1973 and worked as a Jailer, Deputy and Bailiff until his retirement in 1999.  After retirement Herb began working for Faribault Transportation as a bus driver, until his recent illness he had planned to return this fall.

Herb was a complicated man, a man who was driven by his heart but didn’t want people to know that.  He was a jokester, engaging in what he called “war” with his neighbors that resulted in gaudy lawn ornaments being shared back and forth between properties.  In spite of his belief he was alone after Rosie’s passing, he had an amazing group of friends.  This included his friends in law enforcement, his co-workers at the bus garage, coffee friends, local restaurant staff who he harassed endlessly, nieces and nephews, and other close friends that became family.  Herb and Rosie didn’t have children, but he became a surrogate grandfather to Danielle, Samantha, Jacob, Caitlin and Alexandra.

Herb was a member of the American Legion Post 43 in Faribault.  He loved flowers, tinkering in his shop, snow blowing, making and collecting clocks, taking drives in his car, eating out and spending time with friends.

Herb joins his parents LeRoy and Olive, his beloved Rosie, brothers, Grant and LeRoy Stam Jr., sisters, Elizabeth Liverseed, Harriet Schultz, Ellen Remington, Lucille Cihla and Rose “Sis” Stam in heaven.   He is survived by nieces, nephews and close friends too numerous to name.
