Herbert George Kotek, of Faribault, passed away last week at his home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 4th at 11:00 a.m. at Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Faribault, with visitation for one hour preceding the Mass and fellowship afterward. A private interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
Herb was born on July 5th, 1956 to George and Marie (Hickey) Kotek. He grew up quickly as the eldest child, caring for his younger siblings and working various jobs at an early age to help support a large family. He graduated from Faribault High School and subsequently attained a degree in Law Enforcement and Criminology. From humble beginnings as a small town police chief to a long career with Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, he dutifully served as a Peace Officer for 26 years.
Herb was an avid runner, natural athlete, and born mechanic who loved to be outdoors and work with his hands. A devout Catholic, he was active in his local churches, St. Mary’s School programs, and the Knights of Columbus, getting a kick out of calling Sunday bingo at the KC Hall for many years.
By his own account, the happiest days of his life were the day he was married and the days his children were born. Dad was a charismatic and charming man who enjoyed making strangers smile - whether it was in the grocery store, on a run, or throughout his work, they rarely remained strangers for long. With his quick wit and welcoming smile, he was quite the hit at summer parades and celebrations, often to his kids’ embarrassment. He regularly worked second jobs and late hours to provide his children with the opportunities and experiences of a vibrant and fulfilling childhood, for which they are immensely and eternally grateful.
Herb is preceded in death by his parents and brother in infancy, Francis Michael, and survived by four proud children, one grandchild, five siblings: Linda (Jim) Ackman, Mary Kay (Mark) Sisler, Paul (Pam) Kotek, Roxanne Kotek, and Jerry (Kate) Kotek, and many other relatives and friends.
