George E. DeLay, age 98 of Faribault, passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at his home.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 5, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at The Episcopal Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour in Faribault. Interment will be held at the Maple Lawn Cemetery in Faribault with military honors provided by the Rice County Central Veterans Association.
Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home & Crematory of Faribault on Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. and at the church on Monday for one hour prior to services.
The family prefers that memorials be directed to the Faribault Senior Center, Midwest Specialties Services or Disabled American Veterans Association in memory of George.
George Edward, the son of Paul and Margaret (Miner) DeLay, was born on May 4, 1916 in St. Cloud, MN. He attended St. Cloud Tech High School and graduated with the class of 1934. Following high school George attended St. John's University. After his graduation from St. John's, George enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II. After his honorable discharge, George attended the University of Minnesota and earned his Master's Degree in Public Administration. On August 5, 1944 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Lawrence at St. John's Episcopal Church in St. Cloud. George's work career began in the late 1940's in Minneapolis at Cargill in the Accounting Department. He would later move to Cedar Rapids, IA and work for Murphy Motor Freight. In the 1950's they would move to Robbinsdale, MN and George was the City Clerk and later the City Manager. He would hold this position from 1958 to 1978 and because of his hard work and dedication, a city park was named after him. George's last move for work in 1978 would take them to Madison, SD where he was the Finance Director for Heartland Consumers Power District. He retired from this position in 1988. George and Evelyn would move to Faribault in 1992. Evelyn preceded him in death on May 17, 2002. George was a member of the Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour, the American Legion Post 43 in Faribault, Board Member at Maple Lawn Cemetery and a former board member at the Faribault Golf Club.
He is survived by his four children, Paula (Dr. Kenneth L.) Zakariasen of Cleveland, OH, Diane (Gary G.) Wollschlager of Fairmont, MN, Lucille (Patrick M.) Henry of Mendota Heights, MN and William (Lori) DeLay of Orono, MN; by two grandson, ten granddaughters, three great grandsons and by nine great granddaughters and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his son, James Paul DeLay, his brother, Warren DeLay and his three sisters, Lucille Swanberg, Abbie Nelson and Pauline Butler.
