Eugene W. Powell, age 88 of Waseca, died on Friday, October 8, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, October 12th at 3:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca with Minister Barbara Peterson, officiating. Interment will be in the Woodville Cemetery in Waseca. The Powell Family will greet friends on Tuesday afternoon prior to the service from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca McRaith Funeral Home and Crematory in Waseca is handling arrangements. Eugene William was born on February 25, 1922 in Waseca, Minnesota to Sylvester and Florence (Bird) Powell. Gene attended Waseca Schools. He was united in marriage to Monna Schaumkessel in 1946 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Gene farmed for 45 years in Woodville Township, Waseca County before retiring in 1985. Over the years he volunteered his time to various organizations including: Woodville Township A.S.C.S. Committee, Waseca Cooperative Creamery, Waseca County Dist. #7 School Board, Woodville Township Board, and the Region 9 Board representing Waseca County. For 16 years Gene served as a Waseca County Commissioner. He was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca. Gene enjoyed collecting old cars and having them restored. He is survived by his daughter Susan Paniagua of Goodyear, AZ and his granddaughter Laura Paniagua of Brenham, TX; by his brother Raymond Powell, and his sisters Margaret (Mike) McNeil, and Evelyn Wetzel, all of Waseca; by his sister-in-law Maxine Powell of Waseca. He was preceded in death by his parents; by his brothers Arthur and Harlan, and his sister Helen (Don) James; by his sister-in-law Joyle Powell and brother-in-law Warren Wetzel; by his former wife Monna Schaumkessel.
