Eugene Peter Miller was born on September 9, 1921, in Blooming Grove Township, Waseca County, the fourth son of Peter J. and Edith (Stangler) Miller. He grew up on the family farm working with his parents and siblings. Gene was very proud of this heritage. He attended the small country school near their family farm, and graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School with the class of 1939. On May 25, 1943, Gene was united in marriage to Mary Catherine Sexton at the St. Ann Catholic Church in Janesville, MN. They made their home on the Miller family farm in Blooming Grove Township, Waseca County, where they raised crops and beef cattle for over sixty years. Over the years, Gene served on the board of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference, Waseca County Park Board and the Soil and Water Conservation Board. He was also an active member of the Church of the Sacred Heart, the Knights of Columbus of Waseca and other social justice groups. He loved the outdoors and taught his daughters how to hunt and to drive tractors. Gene also enjoyed teaching firearm safety classes, flying small planes, and other activities.
