1923-2014
Eugene John Malecha, age 90, of Faribault, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the Pleasant Manor Nursing Home in Faribault.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 205 NW 2nd Ave. Medford, MN. Interment will be held at the Calvary Cemetery in Faribault with military honors provided by the Rice County Central Veterans Association.
Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home & Crematory of Faribault on Friday, May 30th from 4-7:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 9-10:00 a.m.
The family prefers that memorials be directed to the Maryknoll Sisters or The Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver in memory of Eugene.
Eugene John Malecha was born on August 14, 1923, in Dakota County to John and Mary (Langr) Malecha. Eugene married Ann Josephine Timmers on September 20, 1949 and they raised eight children in Faribault. Eugene was a bridge construction worker with Dresser & Sons of Winona, MN and built over 100 bridges in Southeastern Minnesota while also managing the family farm for his mother for many years. Eugene enjoyed fixing things over the years and always used logic and reasoning in all his decision making. His children are very appreciative and have learned much from both of their parents. Eugene served in the U.S. Army in World War II in both the Philippines and Japan while earning a Purple Heart in active battle in the Philippines.
He is survived by his eight children, John (Patti) Malecha of Eagle River, AK, Patti (Lyle) Hopkins of Holiday, FL, Susan (Sheldon) Skirten of Pensacola, FL, Mark (Scarlet) Malecha of Morristown, MN, Kathy (Ben) Morgan of Hamilton, IL, Bernadette Nicholson of Northfield, MN, Janice Zielske of Faribault, MN and Carl (Cindy) Malecha of Faribault, MN; by 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; by his siblings, Larry (Liselot) Malecha, Paul (Mary Jean) Malecha, both of Faribault, MN Fran Hellensmith of Okeechobee, FL and Connie (Rich) Wetter of Faribault, MN; by his sister-in-law, Lois Malecha of Faribault, MN and by nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ann on August 20, 1994, two sisters, Grace Hose and Mary Alice Caddle and by his brother, Jerry Malecha.
