He was baptized in Crow Lake, SD at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and confirmed at Ss Peter & Paul's Catholic Church in Blue Earth. Gene grew up in Elmore and graduated from Elmore High School in 1952, and went on to attend the University of Minnesota. In 1956 began serving his country as a member of the United States Army Reserves. On April 12, 1958 he was united in marriage to Connie Brakke, and they later divorced. For many years Gene was in business with his father; Edwards and Son Farmers Livestock in the Elmore Area. He later changed careers and became a successful Knights of Columbus Insurance Representative. On December 30, 1998 he married Leatrice Matheson. Gene was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Madison Lake. He was a longtime member and Past Commander of the Elysian American Legion Post #311, and was proud to have served as a member of the Honor Guard.
