Edward Schmitz

August 2, 1931 — April 12, 2012

Edward Carl Schmitz, age 80, of St. Paul, went home to be with the Lord on April 12, 2012.             Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 16, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 139 Mercy Drive, Faribault. Interment will be at the St. Lawrence Cemetery in Faribault, with military honors provided by the Rice County Central Veterans Association.             Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home & Crematory of Faribault on Sunday from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. and on Monday for one hour prior to the services at the church. The Rosary will be recited on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.             Ed met the love of his life Rene (Lorraine) Hatfield in 1971 and they were married on May 6, 1972. Ed and Rene never had children of their own but were blessed with many special nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He leaves behind his loving wife of nearly 40 years, Rene Schmitz of St. Paul; brother, Bob (Bev) Schmitz of St. Paul; sister, Mary Jo Walden of Maplewood; brothers and sisters-in-law, Don Hatfield of Faribault, John (Janet) Hatfield of Minneapolis, Bob (Janice) Hatfield of Sleepy Eye, MN, Bill (Judy) Hatfield of Faribault, and Jerry Hatfield of Faribault. Ed was the middle child of Bernard and Marie (Shepers) Schmitz. He was born on August 2, 1931 in St. Paul. He graduated from Harding High School in 1949. After graduation he worked for Northern States Power, then putting windows in some of the schools in Faribault. He joined the U.S. Navy, serving for four years and was honorably discharged. He then started a 28 year career at the U.S. Postal Service delivering mail throughout St. Paul. In retirement he worked for 19 years at the Highland Golf Course before health issues prevented him from continuing work in 2009. He will be greatly missed by all of those he left behind, but know we will all be together again.             He was preceded in death by his parents; and parents-in-law, Marion and Frances Hatfield; brothers, Ben and Fred Schmitz; and sisters-in-law, Margie Yerhot, Frances (Babe) Hoisington, and Mary Hanson.
