E. Herdien

Ethel Loraine Herdien, age 89, passed away at the home of her daughter, Judith C. Seeley on Friday, August 26, 2016 at 7:40 pm, with family by her side. E. Loraine was born on June 12, 1927, in Broundland, West Virginia to Murl B. and Ethel (Bayes) Gillispie.

Loraine was married to Rex Smith and had three daughters: Judith of Waseca, MN, Nora Bryant of Prattville, Alabama and Elizabeth "Beth" Mc Kee of Troy, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Robert "Bobby" Gillispie; two sisters, Doris Ross and Elizabeth Priestly; a grandson, Anthony Seeley; and a great granddaughter, Nora Gordon.

She is survived by two sisters, Clarice Hatfield, 94, of Hurricane, WV, and Louise Thornhill, 90, of Alum Creek, WV; her 3 daughters; 9 grandchildren; many great and great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Loraine graduated from Washington District High School, Val Victorian of her class. She was offered a full scholarship but instead, worded for her father in his general store. Loraine worked for the State of West Virginia and the State of Minnesota from which she retired in 1991.

She spent much of her retirement traveling to visit her daughters and sisters who loved to go to garage sales and shopping. She had the opportunity to visit her daughter Nora in Germany where her husband was stationed while in the military and took that opportunity to also visit the Gillispie homeland in Scotland.

Most of all, Loraine will be fondly remembered as a caring and loving mom and granny Loraine as she was called by her great grand kids. She will be thoroughly missed.
