Charles was born on December 8, 1936 in Bridgewater Township, Rice County, MN to John and Marie (Bongers) Ernste. He graduated from Bethlehem Academy High School with the class of 1954.

He met the love of his life while playing ball. Because he was a "ball hog," Chuck had to overcome an unfavorable first impression with his bride-to-be. Utilizing his charm, cheerful disposition, and infectious smile, he eventually persuaded Susan Naseth to spend the rest of her life with him. They were united in marriage on November 14, 1964 at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Faribault. Much of Chuck's working career centered upon serving people. He worked diligently and with pride, doing the little things that led to delighted customers and lasting relationships.

Chuck devoted his life to serving God. He was a leader in his church and an evangelist for the catholic faith. We do know that he served the church as usher, lector, Eucharistic minister, choir member, and in numerous other pastoral care activities. We don't know of all the random acts of kindness that he performed daily which is exactly how he wanted it.

Prior to retirement he was the sexton for St. Lawrence Cemetery, providing guidance and consolation for many at a difficult time in their lives. Chuck also lived his faith through his dedication to the Knights of Columbus. He served as Grand Knight of Council 889, as District Deputy, and as a member of the Fourth Degree. He was passionate about the service the Knights provided and recruited a large number to join the fraternity.

Chuck loved life. For a long time, he chaired the annual Safe Place for Newborns fund raiser. He was an impassioned advocate for its mission and a champion for Pro-Life. Chuck played church league softball for many years. He enjoyed sports, reading, and puzzles. More than anything, Chuck valued spending time with family.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Ernste of Faribault; children, Jeffry (JoAnn) Ernste of Savage, MN, Renee Ernste of Eden Prairie, MN, and Michele (Barry) Hirano of Savage; grandchildren, Paige, Peyton, and Bret Ernste, Kaori, Keira, Kaiya, Gabriel, and Keiko Hirano; brother, John (Muggs) Ernste of Northfield, MN; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Ernste of Northfield, Carol Ernste of Faribault, and Karen Ernste of White Bear Lake, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marie Ernste; sisters, Betty (Bill) Meulepas, Belle (Alden) Bartel, and Rita (Les) Van Thomme; and brothers, Archie, Adolph (Marie), Alex (Betty), Richard, and Stanley Ernste.
