Dr. Benjamin Michael Tuma, 82, died Wednesday March 8, 2017 in Faribault. Ben was born January 20th, 1935, in Lonsdale, MN to Dr. George J. Tuma and Mary Ann (Lepeska) Tuma. He graduated with the New Prague High School class of 1953. He earned a B.S. degree, Magna Cum Laude, in 1957 from what is now the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. He graduated from Marquette School of Medicine with his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1961 and interned at Milwaukee Hospital. On December 26, 1959 he married Patricia Barbara Wroblewski at St. Stanislaus Church in Milwaukee.
He served for two years at the Pawnee Oklahoma Hospital as a medical officer in the Indian Health Service. Dr. Tuma then worked as a General Practitioner at the Family Medical Clinic in Montgomery, MN for four years prior to joining the staff of the Faribault Clinic in 1968 where he worked for twenty-five years. After retiring from the Faribault Clinic, he did part time Family Practice work for clinics in various Minnesota cities including Rochester, LeSueur, Deer Valley, Remer, Park Rapids, Walker, Chisholm and also the Allina Clinic in Faribault. He finally retired in January of 1997. Dr. Tuma was a member of the Minnesota and American Medical Associations and a life member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Ben loved being a family doctor but also enjoyed various hobbies throughout his life: RV camping, hiking in the nature center or Sonoran desert, pruning his lawn, biking, knitting, latch hook, and making his famous caramels. He is survived by his two children, Carrie Fay Tuma-Kennedy (Mark Kennedy) of Tempe AZ, and his son Phillip Eric Tuma (Cari Cruikshank) of Faribault and five grandchildren: Abby Leanna and Ellie Patricia Kennedy of Tempe, AZ and Adam Benjamin, William John and Alexander Phillip Tuma of Faribault, MN and a sister Margaret Ann Huggett of Scottsdale AZ.
He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia, his parents and three siblings: Michael and George Tuma of Lonsdale and Mary Teresa Collinge of Zumbrota, MN.
To honor Ben's life, an Open House celebration will be held on April 8, 2017, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Bachrach Loft Building, 318 Central Avenue, Faribault.
In lieu of gifts, the family encourages donations to the Paradise Center for the Arts or the River Bend Nature Center.
