Arthur "Art" M. Amundson, age 95 of Faribault, passed away in peace surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, September 19, 2010 at the District One Hospital in Faribault. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the Divine Mercy Catholic Church in Faribault with the Rev. Kevin Finnegan, pastor officiating. Interment will be held at the Maple Lawn Cemetery with military honors provided by the Rice County Central Veterans. Visitation will be held at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday for one hour prior to services. Arthur Melvin, the son of Harold and Hanna (Knutson) Amundson, was born on January 4, 1915 in Hampton, ND. At the age of 16, Art served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Northern Minnesota. As a young man, Art worked as a boiler operator in Cannon Falls where he met the love of his life, Lorraine Karels. Art and Lorraine married on June 13, 1937 in Big Stone, SD. After having two sons, Harold and Tom, Art joined the army in 1942. He was stationed in Germany and served as a medic helping at Normandy Beach and the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, Lorraine and Art raised a family of six adding Rosemary, Phyllis, Judy, and Richard. Having lived in California, Ortonville and Northfield, the family settled in Faribault on 7th Street for 57 years. Art worked as a painter, plasterer and acoustical carpenter for Artcraft, Inc. well into the 1970's. The last 2 years Art lived at St. Lucas Care Center and Keystone Assisted Living receiving excellent treatment. Art was devoted to Lorraine and family, friends and the AA Club. He enjoyed playing cards, hunting and fishing. He was thankful for 50 years of sobriety with the help of AA, and made many friends by serving as an inspiration and example to many. He continues to live on in the hearts and minds of the many lives he touched. He is survived by six children, Harold (Toni) Amundson of New Port Ritchie, FL, Tom (Marlys) Amundson of Lakeville, MN, Rosemary (Ron) Weyl of LeSueur, MN, Phyllis (Robert) Stade of Mankato, MN, Judy (Gary) Carver of Faribault, MN and Richard Amundson of Tucson, AZ; by 16 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren; by his sister Corrine Walsh of Faribault; by his former daughter in law, Shirley Amundson of Faribault and by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a daughter in infancy, grandson in infancy, Scott Carver, great grandson in infancy, John Kundson Jr., his brother, Kermit Amundson and by five sisters, Hilda Dube, Helen Hokeness, Vi Sorensen, Millie Hopperstad and Marion Parup.
